Sikh Youth Calgary raise $51,985 for Calgary Food Bank

Sikh Youth Calgary (SYC) is on a mission to create a positive change within the community. Every year during the annual Sikh Parade (Nagar Kirtan), SYC holds the Walking Away Hunger campaign to raise food and funds for the Calgary Food Bank. This year, with our communities support, we raised $51,985 in 39 days!

Our commitment to this change begins at our roots: The Three Pillars of Sikhism by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. These are Kirat Karo, Naam Japo, and Vand Chakko. This translates to: earn an honest living, remember and meditate God’s name, and uplift your community by selflessly giving your time and wealth.

Our campaign supports the ideology of langar (Community Kitchen), by providing food to everyone regardless of caste, wealth, or race; thus creating a positive energy of equality. ‘Walking Away Hunger’ is a youth initiative that started in 2006 to end the problem of hunger in Calgary; although we have made long strides, there is a lot more work to do. We rely heavily on the youth, our neighbours, schools, local community organizations, and businesses to ensure the Calgary Food Bank receives enough funding to feed the needy.

Over the last year, more than 132,000 people visited the Calgary Food Bank, 43% of those people were children. Raising food and funds through the Walking Away Hunger Campaign ensures these children are receiving the proper nutrition for the day.

We hope this message serves a purpose of raising awareness for those who need it most. SYC is truly blessed to have everyone who supported this campaign. THANK YOU to those who commit to selfless service!
